The Southern Valley

tipon-piquillacta-sumac cocaTIPON

To the north of Chuquipampa we find Suchuna. It is a geologic formation similar to a hill with some waviness forming ruts parallel to the rocks. Nowadays, children use it as it was a slide. Inca Garcilazo says that he also played here when he was a child.

At the top there is the famous "Inca Throne" or k'usillup hink'inan (jump of the monkey). The name is really curious, as it is a stone carving in the shape of the two rows of steps. From the highest part we see the entire esplanade making us realize it was an excellent place for the royal seat and at the same time an altar.
In Rodadero we also find terraces, tunnels, tombs and stairs carved in stone. Recent works have revealed a spring that provided water to a round puddle from where a complex net of canals started.
There is no doubt that Suchuna was a very important religious place as Guamancancha, temple of the fourth ceque of the Chinchaysuyo, was located there. It should have been two small rooms from where they observe the remains to the east side of the slide. These rooms had been used by the young noble who fasted to participate in the huarachico. In this celebration there was a rite where they had their ears pierced.

PIQUILLACTA AND THE LUCRE LAGOON

Piquillacta or City of fleas is a national archaeological park with landscapes of great interest. It is situated in the province of Quispicanchis and covers an area of 8453 acres. It was one of the most spectacular regional centers of the Wari culture.
Piquillacta is a compound word in Quechua that means lousy town (piki: fleas, llaqta: town). Despite of the fact that the original name is not known, this place was called "Pikillaqta" since the last years of the colonial period or at the beginning of the republic.

Location
It is situated at 32 km (20 miles) to the east and at 22 km to the south of the city of Cusco following the asphalted road to Puno.
Currently, they use the paved road to Puno and Arequipa. It is at 3150 m.a.s.l.

ANDAHUAYLILLAS

(3198 msnm) It is a small town with not a severe climate as it is surrounded by mountains in the left bed of the Vilcanota river which is named as Urubamba in the lowest regions. Its lands are fertile and its people are quiet and friendly.
Anciently, the name of this city was Antawaylla (Anta=cooper, Waylla=field). Both voices joint means "coppery field". Its old name was Antawaylla translated as "coppery field". Then the name was "Andahuaylas" but it was the same to a bigger province in Apurimac. For this reason, they changed it to Andahuaylillas using the short way.

Location
The district of Andahuaylillas is part of the province of Quispicanchis and it is located at 3198m.a.s.l. (3100 meters) (10170 feet), 35 km (about 25 miles, 1 hour ) to the south (east) of Cusco by the paved road leading to Puno. Its lands are very fertile and there are two important tourist attractions:
